All,

Dipping one toe back into the realm of workshops for a one-timer. Tell me if you would attend this (no, you're not going to wind up on a list or anything...just want your opinions.)

- All about makeup, open to models, MUAs, photogs, alike.
- 1-2 CERTIFIED makeup artists doing 1-2 models, a few different looks based upon the occasion/reason for the shoot. (e.g. wedding, portrait, editorial, high fashion). They teach you what to look for and what's important about the almighty makeup.
- Photogs will have opps to shoot these looks for their books. Given the time bs number of people vs cost, time would be limited for each look but everyone gets something.
- Lighting is provided. Natural light, too.

- Cost is $100/person
- Limit 15 people
- In ATL, 1 day, possibly bleed over into next day just for pure shooting.

Thoughts?

Jim

I think I am really done with workshops...

But for 100.00 I would think about it. But it must have something I wouldn't or couldn't get on my own. Location, models, equipment.

Now that I think about it... price is more important than most of that... With the right money... I guess I could have any location, model, equipment...

I guess it is easy to fork over 100.00 for a day or two of fun... As long as it is fun and a good ratio of model, mua, shooter.

I don't know... maybe small groups of 2 shooters, 2 models and 2 muas rotate on a location that has enough room for the shooting that we are all not on top of each other.

I guess I left out the “classroom time” but who really wants that anyway. I just want to shoot.

I would consider attending a workshop like this for $100. I'm only two and a half hours away from Atlanta.

Hi, Jim

Having been to your workshops in the past, I know that anything you do will be first class. The premise of this workshop is interesting. If I'm reading correctly, the workshop is "What Photographers Need to Know About Makeup" (maybe more correctly called "How to Make or Break a Shoot in One Easy Step").

Unfortunately, I'm not sure that photographers realize that they don't know this stuff. I often look at posted images and see a mismatch of looks -- high fashion makeup on a swimsuit model at the beach, for example -- and I wonder if the photographer and MUA ever spoke before the shoot.

Some photographers don't realize that, as the creator of the image and director of the shoot, THEY are responsible for all of the elements in the image, including the model's makeup. A photographer can hire the world's top MUA, but if the only direction he gives is "Make her look good," he's pretty much just wasting his money.

The problem, as I see it, is that many photographers don't know how to talk to a makeup artist. They can talk f/stops, lighting ratios, and synch speeds, but when it comes to makeup, they don't know the lingo. Your workshop can supply that missing information. Your professional MUA can explain that asking for "clean and natural" or "editorial" will produce a very different look than specifying "glamour" or "smoky" or "high fashion." She can also demonstrate how layering can produce a variety of looks in one shooting session.

But again, I'm not sure that photographers know what they don't know, or that they NEED to know this stuff. The attitude of many workshop attendees is "Don't try to teach me any anything; just throw me a model and let me shoot." (See the last line of Chris' response above.) They're concerned with model-photographer ratios and shooting time, "hot" models and complicated sets. And while a case can be made for "learning by shooting," a better case can be made for learning from the experience of professionals.

I applaud you for stressing your use of CERTIFIED makeup artists. (When I brought up this point at a workshop I attended, the instructor replied, "The only person who cares whether the makeup artist is certified is the makeup artist herself.")

I think this is a great concept, Jim, and I hope it's successful. You can count on me to be there. I could use a refresher on the subject, and may even leave my camera at home.

Randy
