All,
The evolution of Focus Workshops continues!
We're here to announce a new workshop:
Focus On: Your Portfolio! May 20-21, 2006 - Schulenburg, Texas
(Halfway between San Antonio and Houston!)

Your portfolio may be the most important piece of photographic equipment that you own! Whether it is your online portfolio or your book nothing is more important! Here is where you can learn how to put together the portfolio you need and what to do with that portfolio once you have it.
Shoot beautiful models on a 600 acre ranch and radically change your book and your future.
---This is a special workshop wiith special announcements and a special gift to all those that attend.--- It's pretty cool, trust me.
AND the rate for both days? Seminar/posing demo on Day 1, and all-day shooting day 2?
$195 inclusive of BOTH days.
No slap-in-your-face release fees. No surprises. No nickel and diming you didn't expect. A solid rate to boost your book. Call it a tax-time break. Call it a honest respect for your hard earned dollar. Anyone who has been to our workshops knows we're serious about that stuff.
Models to be announced soon....don't miss out.

Jim,
I have a question, I love when folks advertise "no release" fees, but don't advertise what type of releases will be provided--usually these type of "no release" fee workshops mean promotional release only, which in my opinion, robs a model out of money she deserves for her talent--talk about getting slapped in the face.

I seriously think "promotional releases" take advantage of models. As with most "promotional releases" models give rights to photographers to use the images in their printed portfolios--which to me is fine, but when the promotional releases allow use on the "public" internet, the photographer gets free (commercial use) of a model's image (likeness) which is ok if the event coordinator (you in this case) is paying the model.

What I find is most workshops advertising "no release" fees are not paying but hotel and food for the model, some even air fare but not always. They promise the model great images, and most models rarely get those images and wind up doing modeling for free, not fair to the models. Some of these "promotional release only" workshops also have in fine print that you can "negotiate" a commercial or other release with the model, which means $$$ or a "suprise." We don't play that game at my workshops.

At my workshops we give the promotional right to printed portfolios, beyond that it's a flat fee per model--usually $50, and NOT mandatory--voluntary only. ALL the money goes directly to the model, most models make nothing less than $500 for the event and often over $1,000 some even $1,200 for the event. The models get paid, the photographers get great images and great models--that's why in the Virgin Islands workshop I have at the end of the month we have a Playboy Playmate and Playboy Special Editions model as well as three other top models.

The beauty of it all, it's right there in the web site so no one get's "slapped" or suprised as often as some like to claim that.

I personally find it insulting that models in many workshops (not mine) do not get paid, they get promises, which are rarely delivered (not speaking of any workshop specifically here). All models should get paid for workshops.
TFP or promotional work should only be reserved for one on one shooting in a non-workshop environment shoots that help both the photographer and model--when a workshop promoter, in this case you and Rick, are clearly making money--nothing wrong with making money--the models should get paid too and hopefully you share your profits with them in some form or fashion as they are in front of the camera working.

I've never been to one of yours and Rick's workshops, just curious since you make it sound like photographers get taken advantage of by releases at other workshops, and I personally find that insulting as that is not the case in my workshops--I'm upfront on everything, from the website to the follow-on emails to the actual event.

Models deserve to get paid at a workshop, afterall, a workshop is (your) a commercial gig--someone is making money. Do you compensate the models besides prints or do the models get slapped in the face with promised prints?
Thanks, rg sends!

RG,
You make some great points, and let us make something really clear. We are in no way calling out any workshop that is upfront with their customers about charging extra for releases. That's great! If models and photographers like that arrangement then great! We have a problem with workshops that do not announce such practices and then walk around with the "tip-hat" much to the chagrin of photogs that have already paid and were not expecting it.
It is our choice to allow all models and photographers work out whatever they wish as far as full releases. That is just how we choose to go about doing things. We have no problem with you charging extra at all since you are up front about it. Not everyone is so upfront and some photographers come away feeling ripped off or pressured or "guilt tripped" into paying for something after they arrive. That is what we have a problem with. We are glad that you don't participate in that practice.
The model/photographer relationship is a funny thing. In some places models pay the photographers. In some photographers pay the models. Everyone works in the marketplace that they choose. We have worked out a system that has worked beautifully. Models are getting the images they want/need and photographers are getting images, as well as getting equipped for the future (which is our real goal). The models are leaving happy, and it is their opinion that matters when it comes to their compensation. We are not trying to be content providers, so we don't provide full releases. If the photographers and models work out full releases that is fine. We provide events where photographers can have a great time while becoming more prepared/better shooters. We provide models with images and growth opportunities as well.
The practices are different at your workshop, and that's great. We don't have any desire to argue with you about who is right and wrong in how the workshops are done. We spell out very clearly what we offer and give photographers the information they need to make a sound decision on what is best for them. We do the same with attending models and all seem happy at the end now.
I am glad that you join us in your dislike for people unfairly surprising workshop attendees with surprise fees. We usually have 8-10 models at our workshops and that would be an awful experience for someone to have to pay all of that extra money ($50 x 8 = $400) or for some models to walk away empty handed while others get all of the money, or for photographers to have to break out their wallet for the makeup artist (another surprise practice at some workshops).
You have been invited to our workshops previously and we understand that you were not able to come. Hopefully at some point our schedules will match up so that we can work together more positively. A standing invite is there for you to attend the Texas workshop.
We understand that competition does not have to be quite that negative. There is room for all of us. The photographers will decide where they are best served and the differences in what we offer are not something to be angry about. The differences are what separate us and ensure that the needs of the photographers attending are met.
