One of the best comments that I noticed the photographer say on that video was that the background is a part of the picture used to compliment the model but not the main part of the picture. This is something that I see many photographers, probably most of them without any real artistic training, get confused about constantly telling someone that they are distracted by other things in the picture so that they end up only wanting to see images that are done on plain paper backgrounds.
