Thanks for the video,

Can anyone tell me the brand of camera the photographer is using?

That's easy ... Measure your subject to see what f-stop you need/want, and adjust the shutterspeed for ambient.

Your flashlight only cares about f-stops (up to your shutter's highest sync speed which is mostly <= 1/250s). So if you take a picture with the highest syncspeed an lowest iso value using the f-stop you measured at your subject, the background will be at its darkest for that f-stop.

Want more light in the background ? Just make your shutterspeed lower and watch the lights come in

Of course this only works when you can overpower the ambient light, so your flash has to be powerfull enough (which shouldn't be a problem for indoor lighting)

Hope this helps.

so when you meter the ambient you use the apature you'll be using for the subject? or just meter the subject for whatever you want....say 1/60 @ f7.1 and then just raise the shutterspeed when you take the shot

When you meter your subject using a flash there is a consistant amount of light hitting the subject (keeping the flash to model distance the same) on each exposure. This is what determines the f stop. Since the flash is so quick the shutterspeed doesn't really matter for the model. You can alter the shutterspeed to capture the ambient light in the background by slowing it down, or just the opposite keep the background darker by raising the shutterspeed.

I like to think the other way round, I start with my maximum shutter sync speed (which is determined by the shutter of the camera). For my camera this is 1/200s , so this is what I normally use. Then I determin what f-Stop I will be needing to light the subject. Lets say I want f7.1. I then adjust the power of my flash to make my flashmeter-reading at the subject show 7.1.

Now my subject is lit as it should be, and my background is as dark as it can be (iso put on the lowest value, for me iso 100).

If I want more light of the background, all I have to do is make the shutter stay open a little longer. Like 1/60s. Et voila.

It's probably the same as what u wanted to do, but the limiting factor for getting the ambient background darker is the sync speed.

At one point I noticed the reflection of the octobox on the wall behind the model. Technicaly is that OK or should he had flag that somehow?

Also, I've seen this many times. The photographer is pointing his finger aside of him (asuming, telling the model to look there) Does anybody think if his hands where twice as long he would stretch it out all the way?
