I am about to purchase my first DSLR, I've made my choice of a Canon Rebel Xti (400D). But I'm new and reading up on lenses. I found a web site that has the best prices I've seen for the Xti and they offer a lot of different package deals. http://www.bestpricecameras.com/prod...?prodid=713192 My budget is around $600. I'm going to be doing a lot of different shooting, but a lot of glamour type shots of the wife. Could some of you take a look at the package deals to give me some suggestions? I would like to go with 2 lenses a long and short if I can afford it or should I just get a better quality all around lens?

There have been a lot of past articles on this topic. I don't have the referenece in front of me, but try searching and I'm sure you'll come up with several talking about best lens for your budget.
My main CAUTION is the site you mention. This site, and others showing extremely low pricing, have been commented on repeatedly for thier sales tactics. B&H Photo is a good baseline for pricing and everyone swears by their reputation. If drastically lower than B&H then you should be asking why? There was a string in the last few weeks on this but I could not find it. Be careful.

Ok I did some research on Best Price Cameras I found out it's mostly a rip off. Thanks for the warning. I think I will stick to B & H and regular retail stores, but I still would appreciate lens recommendations. This just lowers my budget.
Adorama is also a god place to buy. A lot of low ball places get your basic order, then call you, saying something is out of stock and then the pressure is on to get you to buy other things. I don't have any experience with this company however.
If this is your first "real' camera (not a point and shoot), then i would say just stick with the kit 18 - 70 whatever it is zoom lens. keep in mind that this lens can't hold a candle to the the expensive lenses most people buy. But, you got a lot to learn. And for a general purpose lens, it's going to be ok. You may find that landscape or wildlife photography is more to your liking then shooting people. All of which call for different lenses.
The only option that I would suggest over the kit lens it a 50mm f1.4 or the f1.8 (not the dirt cheap one). A 50mm lens on the XTi is going to be about a 85mm. Which is the standard portrait lenght.
I'll second sticking with the 18-55mm kit lens. That's a 35mm frame equivalent of roughly 28-88mm. Canon has many good quality inexpensive lenses. I used a 28 - 105 and a 75 - 300 for 10 years (on 35mm film camera bodies).
For now, stay within your budget and learn to use the DSLR. The more expensive glass will be there when you decide it's worth the investment.

The brand new Canon 18-55 lens is also an IS lens and can be picked up for about $175 by itself (probably better in a package deal). I have one and really like it.
Added note: here is a composite photo that shows how the IS works for the lens. Both shots were made at 1/15th at 5.6 at 55mm and were handheld. The left bust is the one with IS off and the right the one with IS on. The difference is amazing.
After I made my purchase with bestpricecamera, I did some research. Once I found out how many complaints there were against this company, I cancelled my order and reported my credit card as lost and requested a replacement card.
Just google bestpricecamers complaints and you will see what I mean!
Wouldn't it be better to wait for release of the Canon XSi in April '08?
I have both the XT and XTi. I love the XTi and it serves me very well.
I am inclined to sell both the XT and XTi for the new XSi for its larger LCD and its live view capability.
I do not go only by someone else's review when purchasing a digital camera. I go as far back as a Minolta SRT-101 which I still have today. May you make a wise decision that you will enjoy for years to come.
Is there a classified area on this site, where I might find some one that is selling a used Xti? I think I trust buying a used camera from people on this site than Ebay.
