Thanks to a certain feller that goes by Rolando on here, I've gotten more interested in glamour photography. Lights are on next quarter's list of purchases along with an decent used D2x unless a D3 is announced.

What I'd like to know is what are my best bets for lens selection? I currently have the Nikkor 24-120 VR and a 50 f1.8.

I've read some places that portrait/studio shooters swear by the 17-55mm, while others like the 12-24mm. There is also the camp that like the 70-200mm VR for location work.

In addition to my limited selection, what would be my best next glass purchase(s)?

I very much like my 17-55 for indoor shooting. I don't have a large space and it works well for me. Outdoors, I like my 135 , but I suppose I will get a 70-200 eventually.

Why a D2X or D3 ? I have a D1, a D70 and a D200 and couldn't ask for any additional features. Are you looking for more speed ?

For glamour you often want to get the good compression that the longer lens give you. The small zooms you mention will have problems in that regard. Keep in mind what Rolando said about "compression".

Cheers,

I remember. but i'm very limited by space considerations shooting in my house. That's why I like the 135 F2 for outdoors, on my digitals it works like a 200.

Thanks for pointing that out Roger.

I'm currently shooting a Fuji S3. Its great at what it does well, but it really has serious limitations for some applications that I use it for. I like to shoot wildlife, landscapes, and use it for panoramas for real estate virtual tours. The S3 just doesn't handle those all that well. The huge RAW files, 35megs, are a turn-off as well. Now for skin tones, the S3 is great.

I've given consideration to the D200, but if I'm going to add another body I want the added resolution the D2x will give me.

I have a Nikon D2X and love it - pair it with:

17-55 VR DX f2.8 (love this lens)
18-200 VR DX (excellent all around lens)
70-200 f2.8 VR (love this lens)

Assuming its in your budget, get it right the first time and you won't be looking to "upgrade" later.

I have an S3 and love it, I use the 70-200 2.8 VR on 90% of the time.
