Anyone have a Canon CB-5L charger?

I pretty sure that mine is screwed up. But I don't have the docs that came with it to check.
(Note I'm trying to charge up a Canon BP-511A battery with it and I believe that charger can handle this battery?)

When I load in a near dead battery into the charger body (without it being plugged in) I get a constant Green light. Then when I plug the charger and battery into a wall socket I get a continuous Red light. I leave it sit for a long time but the light is still Red, still continuous. And if I unplug the charger from the socket the light goes continous Green. Pulling the battery out means the Green light slowly fades out.

I think this charger has managed to get a back charge set into it and so it won't allow any juice to flow to the battery. But before I chuck this would someone confirm that there is something wrong.

Thanks...Richard

Re: Anyone have a Canon CB-5L charger?

I think the battery is the problem. I don’t know what green light you are talking about, I cant recall seeing that on may charger..
Anyway I had the same problem, the battery was near dead and after a minute or two it would show a continuous red light telling me that it was fully charged – but it was not. My problem was the battery and not the charger. Try charging another battery and see if the same thing happens.

Re: Anyone have a Canon CB-5L charger?

Ummm, can't do that now...both batteries are charged. This charger was a secondary purchase as I got a (working) charger (different model) when I purchased the 20D. Then I bought the grip in a package that came with a new battery...but no other charger. So before I bought this other one (off eBay) I would have to charge one battery, then charge the other...so it was twice as long a waiting period. I probably should look at Canon's 2 bay charger so I can throw both in at the same time but I hate spending money on something that I've already got...albeit only one battery charged at a time.

I believe that I did at one other time try swapping dead batteries in this charger but had the same results...I really do suspect the charger.

I wonder if I can do a voltage test on the batteries to see just how much of a charge they do have.

I think it's time to go back to my dealer with this...damn.

[some time later]
Well I went to my dealer and had them try another battery...same results. We opened up the unit and found 3 circuit board connections had been tampered with...or there was a spike that had melted the solder. Anyway I had them chuck it.

Yup sometimes you get screwed on eBay...I guess it was my turn. Oh Well.

Re: Anyone have a Canon CB-5L charger?

I've had two cb-5l chargers die on me in the past few years. I think the charging management circuit in them just fries Of course I'm worse than my 4year old on some of my gear

Replacing the charger fixed it for me.
