I'm considering buying a beauty dish of some brand. I've narrowed down the choices to a Mola Demi, the Speedotron 22", and a more basic type 22-24 inch pan reflector. The thing I'm wondering about is how the Mola compares to these others. The speedotron is similiar in design. Is the light off the Mola really so much better than a white pan type? Anyone here who has used both?

Also, What about these really big Mola dishes? Are they head and shoulders above a large octobox?

Thanks

Wish I could give you a true comparison based on personal experiences, but I've only used the Mola and no other beauty dishes.

The Mola that I have is the 33" and I've had it about 3 years. I use it for about 25% of my work with most of my other shots using the 5' and 7' PhotoFlex Octodomes.

The Mola provides me with a bit of a harder, more specular light that gives a nice shine to the model's skin, similar to what you might see in an FHM/Maxim type shot. I like the look a lot on glamour-type shots.

Best regards,
John

i can't provide comparisons because my 33" mola is the only beauty dish i've used. i'm a big fan of it though. here's what i wrote on my blog regarding the mola dish:

John,

Off topic, but do you use the 5' and 7' octoboxes in combination or just one at the time? and if you use one at the time why would you choose the 5' over the 7'?

Thanks

One at a time. :-)

I use the 7' Octodome when I need to flood a large scene or multiple subjects in a full-body shot and I want nice even lighting coverage through the scene.

I'll use the 5' Octodome for single subject shots and where I still want some fall-off to be evident..

Best regards,
John
