PS advice? Color to B&W

I need help......I'm tryin to convert color images to B&W but can't manage to get the B&W tone that I'm looking for. I know how to change the image to grayscale but can't seem to turn it more like a true B&W. I'm using PS6 and would appreciate any help I can get.

I normally use a combination of "Channel Mixer" and "Curves" (through adjustment layers). Also, you can try Russell Brown's technique on this page.

OK, I use Ulead PhotoImpact not PS. All I did was play with highlights (increase 18%) and midtones (decrease 9%), and shadows (decrease 2%).

I NEVER use the convert to grayscale command. There are MUCH better methods.

Here is a simple one with much better results using layers.

First, create a color balance layer.

Then, create a hue/saturation/lightness layer on top of the first adjustment layer and set saturation to -100%.

Finally, go back to the color balance layer, and use te slider controls to adjust the three colors independantly... that will change the relationship of the greyscale tones.

After you like it, merge the layers.

One of the most popular (since none fo the three work best all the time), is to switch to lab mode, go to channels, select the lightness channel, then when asked....say Ok, to deleting the color info, then switch back to greyscale, and tweak brightness/contrast as needed. try a few of these, they simulate filters on BW film....
convert back to RGB after making it a black and white image...make sure monochrome is inabled....
