Photoshop-try this

Open and image, and then duplicate it so you have 2 layers.

Go to Filters-other-Custom and a dialouge will open.

Put 5 in the middle box, and -1 at the NW,SW,NE,SE corners right next to the five (not the far corners).

Set the scale to 1 and the offset to 7.

Hit enter.

Now switch the overlay mode to softlight and fade to taste.

You get a sharpening, contrast, saturation boost all at once.

I have been playing with the custom filter dialouge and figured this out all by myself for once.
