Memory Cards

I'm shooting with a Canon D20 and have been using a 1Gig IBM micro drive and been vary happy with it. I'm wanting to get 2 gig card and I know theres been some improvements on writing. Anyone have any input on this ?

I have a Toshiba 2 gig microdrive and have had no issues whatsoever...other than forgetting it in the card reader while trying to shoot a school function for my son...but I din't think that was the cards fault...

I have since bought (1) 512 Sandisc and (2) 256 PNY cards for safety (brain fart) reasons. I like the smallers cards better but not due to performance, I think its easier and quicker to sort the images before I format.

I think if you check the data transfer rate, you might find that flash cards can be faster than microdrives.

Also the big thing for me is: you drop a flash card, I bet you money its ok, you drop a microdrive and well um, moving parts, fine tolerances, do I need to go there?

and yes you can lose data on a flash card but you do with micro drives too.

I have a Canon digital too and the SanDisk Ultra II 2gb Compact Flash Cards work flawlessly in them. Last time I looked they were around $180, I would dump that micro-drive before it crashes and get two Ultra II's either 1gb or 2gb...

Don't those moving parts consume more battery power too? I've heard the 20d can do up to 1000 shots per battery charge, and I'd bet that isn't using a micro drive (or the on camera flash either for that matter [img]/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img] ).

I've also heard the microdrives go to "sleep" after a while if you don't use it, then when you start taking pics again you have to wait for it to spin up. These days there's not much reason not to go with a solid state card. They're getting cheaper all the time. I've seen 2Gb cards for less than $150 here and there.

I've shot about 20,000 images over four years with it and never a problem. I bought what I though was best at the time. Just doing a little research before I buy something else. Thanx for the info.

Never had a problem with it at all. Sleeping, humm. Never heard of that or experienced it. Always ready. I'm leanning towards the San Disc Ultra II 2 Gig or Lexar 2 Gig Pro series. I hear all the stories about the micro drives but never talk to anyone who had a problem with one.

I don't think you can go wrong with having back up cards. That is if you take them with you. [img]/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img]
