Yesterday I added a flat screen to my computer setup. This was done to save my CRT monitor that I use for images. It is large, hot, Trinitron 20 inch and does great for images. However since the computer world is not making these anymore I wanted to keep it until the cost and quality of Flat Screens catch up.
I added a Flat screen from Costco for only $200. This is my web browsing, email writing, Photoshop Tool holding screen now. I turn off the second screen so now it just sits on my desk staring at me with it big old blank eye.
So yesterday after getting it all set up as a two screen computer setup I went upstairs to get a drink of water. When I got back my son was sitting at my new setup playing a game. This seems to happen when ever I get up because he likes the look of games on my system than his laptop. And his laptop has viruses and spy-ware on it because he likes to plays games on it. (The main reason I have to run spy-ware and virus detection on my system everyday).
"This is sooooo cool now Dude."
"I know but I have work to do so get up. And it is spelled D A D not D U D E."
As he was walking away I mention that the reason I did this was to save my photo monitor so most of time it will be off if I am not working."
"Yea Ok Dad."
Knowing that my words are now floating somewhere around Mars having not stopped at him I sat down and turned off the CRT. As I was working on emails I noticed that if you move the cursor too far to one side it disappears because it goes to the blank monitor. A good thing to keep in mind but it also gave me an idea.
I move the cursor all the way to the other CRT and making a show of getting up and going upstairs I waited on the steps. Sure enough I hear my son sitting at my station saying,"What is wrong with this thing?"
Waiting a couple of minutes I return and ask,"What seems to be the problem son?" in my best Ward Clever voice.
"I don't know Dad. There seems to be a problem with your setup. I don't see the cursor. You probably set it up wrong."
"Really," I said, "You know I was reading in PC Today that this can sometimes happen with XP on a two monitor setup. They gave a set of Hot Keys that might work. If I remember it was Ctrl + Shift + Alt + ~ + 4 + 9 + Caps Lock + \ + + + + Then enter."
Without him seeing I bumped the mouse and the cursor moved back in.
"Wow that is bummer. Ok well I got stuff to do on my laptop."
Yea don't mess with old dude.
