What is the industry standard size print for a model portfolio. I was just told by a modeling agency the standard print size for a models portfolio is 9 x 12. I have been croping my images to 11 x 14. Shouldn't the two sizes print the same?
Since a majority of our digital slr's have a 2x3 format proportion I tell the models that work with me that 8x12 prints are common to find at most places that make prints and without any additional cropping. I personally have a 9x12 portfolio that allows the 8x12 print to slide in easily.
Even Wal-Mart can print an 8x12.
As I understand, the 9x12 is the most common size for model ports. It goes back to the standard 4.5 x 6 cm medium format & would print the full negative without cropping. Unfortunately, all common U.S. formats: 4x6, 5x7, 8x10 and 11x14 have to be cropped to fit the 9x12, with the 5x7 being the closest match as far as proportion.
I will normally edit my full size files, then crop the image for printing. Yeah, it is a pain.

Sorry, I don't do the online ordering thing, have yet to seen results that meet my standards yet from them, and the biggest issue is that it's by far too slow and if it dosn't come back to me the way I want, I'm screwed unless I want to wait another week to send it back, pay for the shipping to send it back, and then wait for another try. I know, not all are horrible but it's a time thing, I deal with deadlines that are at the latest 3 days total from the time of the shoot to post production and prints.

Are you saying that the models you shoot require prints in three days? Even if I shoot a model for hire, it takes a few days to edit, retouch and print even locally. I usually have prints back from Adorama in three days. I'd hate to be on a schedule tighter than that.
I can't imaging printing a 9 X 12 size for any client other than a model.

Wally world upgraded their processing kiosk and no longer offer 8x12. When I asked the photo dept manager about it she said. "Oh? I didn't know that".

I was in Wal-Mart yesterday and although they don't have 8x12 on their Fuji kiosk machine they do still print 8x12's. You have to ask the photo lab employee to enter it in the system for you. They had a price sheet laminated on the front desk with all of the sizes that they print. 8x12 was listed on there.
Size issues, turnaround time, quality issues…they all go away when you print your own work. I still have an Epson 1280 printer that does nice 11x14 prints that I purchased 7 years ago. I do wedding work on the Epson 2400 and can safely tell customers that they will not fade in their life time with the K3 ink. Print on canvas and impress your friends!
It uses 3 shades of black do get some of the best B&W prints you will ever see.
