Haven't posted anything in a while and wanted to post some of the new blends I've been playing with....

Nice image...but I'm don't understand what "blends" means in this context. Would you explain, please?

Thanks.

I am just using texture overlays and playing with the blending modes in Photoshop to get these looks.

I've just always referred to them as blends.

Blends allow you to combine two layers using one of the Photoshop blending modes. Here is an example showing an original photograph and a layer (top left and top right respectively) and the use of a "vivid blending" mode. Photo on lower is the result of "blending" the top original with the red layer.

So that's basically how blending modes work, but the key is what sort of a layer you create to blend with the original and which blend mode you choose. The original poster would need to tell us what the composition of his blended layer looked like. By the way, there are whole books written on the subject of these. One of the best of these is this one which I've owned for several years:

Blending modes are super powerful and you'll find it well worth your while to play with them. They are also great fun. Here is a pen and ink blend that I use quite often:

Usually blending modes for textures are overlays. For example, the logo in this photo is a separate layer with a white font where the blending mode is set to overlay. That allows the texture of the logo to appear on the original image. The exact same method is used to do things like put tattoos on a model's body in post.

What I'm wondering is what was overlayed or blended onto the original photo. it is a great shot. surely she was happy with it.

Thanks for the explanation Roger, for the example and the book recommendation too.
