Jacqualine #3.

I adjusted contrast on this photo, hope this is ok now.

A simple question------with the use of a reflector, do I still use fill in flash or do I let the reflector do the job?

Another simple question.......does one buy a range of sizes of reflectors, there are so many available? Thanks for bearing with me.

Re: Jacqualine #3.

Gawie,

A reflector serves the same purpose as fill flash. A white reflector bounces soft light on the subject. A silver reflector offers more reflectivity, specular highlights and "cool" skin tones. A gold reflector can be used to "warm" the subject.

There's indeed a whole range of sizes for reflectors, but each size has different uses. Most people opt for a known reflector brand like Lastolite, but there are some simple DIY options too.

But when there's no collapsible reflectors around, fill flash may be your only option. It's not a bad thing, but just be open to other ways to fill in the shadow areas of your subject. For the pros out there please chime in and let me know if I'm way off the mark. Thanks!

JW

Gawie,

I failed to mention that Jacqualine is beauiful.

Keep shooting,

Re: Jacqualine #3.

You already know my answer. Neither. I hate the look of fill flash, especially that tiny bright catchlight.

I like finding spaces that have an even, pleasing quality of light, utilizing the natural reflectors of buildings and nature.

Who wants to start carrying around reflectors and stands and sand bags anyway?

Re: Jacqualine #3.

Dave,

You'r opening up something for me, I didn't know what you meant by natural reflectors..........like buildings with reflective walls, window light, etc. What would you look for in nature?

Can you recommend a good book/s on this subject that will help me?

Gawie.

If you like what you see...DON'T turn the flash on!
