Sleeping Beauty

As part of my ongoing calendar project, I shot sleeping beauty today.

In my mind I started with a vision of Marble floors, big dark bed, and dark starry night.... not at all what I ended up with.

First chore was to find/ make the floor. This took a couple of days of experimenting with paints, and stuff.

It came out all right.

Then the next was to find a bed. I started searching and in the process of looking for beds I found one at a rental house that looked really good... a big old dark canopy bed... heavy...requireing three people to move it...and a cube van.

I also looked at buying some wood posts and making it myself. The pricing at home depot for milled pillers made me rethink this.

The solution that came to me, was to buy some coat racks ( cheap MDF) that were less then renting or milled wood. Since it had to be painted, and a head board put together, the bed became white. Somewhere in the process the time of day changed to day time as well.

When I showed what I wanted to do with the headboard to Lori Gardner ( stylist extrodinare), after she stopped laughing ( she does that alot to my Ideas) we worked out the fabric that we would need to drape the bed and create a fuller look.

When I first started working with Lori, a couple of years ago, she would bring in 6 or 8 outfits for me to look at. She would almost always nail it with the first one or two. Now, she brings one or two pieces to look at, or in the case of this shoot, a poloroid of just one dress. One of my favourte parts of the session is the "show & tell" when Lori shows what she has planned for the look. For instance the crown she brought was just amazing....I don't know were she finds these treasures.

I mentioned earlier about the amount of effort I put into creating a floor for this shoot... when i went to actually block the shot out, I slowly realized, as much I tried, the floor wasn't going to be seen... oh well I guess I will have to use it another time.

This is an image of the "bed" with the faux Marble floor

And this is a proof of what we ended up with.

Re: Sleeping Beauty

Very nice! About the only minor things I could think of, would be the odd look of her right hand fingers, and also that her head is a bit stiff and straight, would expect someone sleeping, esp for as long as sleeping beauty, to have their head turned more and in a more relaxed position. Nice shot though!

If you look closely ( hard to see on the web) is the drop of blood from the spindle

Re: Sleeping Beauty

OK, I am not qualified to be critical...and hesitate to even be thought as such since I really am impressed with the quality of the work. This is truly art, no doubt about it. And great art at that. But the window gives a hot spot that pulls the eyes away from the beauty of the rest of it. I do like the raised finger as it helps confirm that this is Sleeping Beauty without even needing a title.
