Some Beach shots from this past weekend

Heather came to my beach house this weekend and we shot a few on the beach...

Very nice work BobbyG...but then that's all I've seen from you is nice work. If you don't mind sharing, how did you light #3 and #5? Beach shots are trickier to expose well (for me) and you nailed those two IMO.

Cheers,
LSC

Thanks for the compliments...ALL of these were lit with an ON CAMERA flash (Speedlight 580)...I used a bracket to move the flash away and below the camera. I metered the background to the shutter speed and aperture to capture the sunrise. I then set the camera to about 1 stop higher and set my flash to fire at 1/4 power...This effectively overpowered the sunrise and slightly underexposed it...which is what I wanted ...(image #3)

On image 5, I faced the model directly into the sun (this was one of our last shots as the sun was rising quickly and getting more powerful by the second) and simply added the fill to taste...I believe this was shot at about 1/32 flash power and I bounced it into the sand...

Canon 20D
Canon 70-200 L series

Re: Some Beach shots from this past weekend

"Heather came to my beach house this weekend and we shot a few on the beach..."

Do you have any idea how envious that makes me, for one, feel? Enjoying yourself, are you?

Jeeze.

BTW, good photos. Like the smile in the first, and your composition - leading the eye with the posts - nice. My, she has a lovely derriere, but your exposure is a bit too much, as evidenced by the white flower and the top's strap. (Sorry to be so petty, but that's how envy makes me react. Looks like you'll just have to get used to it.)

This is just my opinion, and I may be off, as my age has caused my mind to wander, but in the third through sixth, it looks like she was going for a very sexy, "come hither" look, but her face and attitude are just too sweet for it to quite work, IMO. She comes closest in the sixth, but even then... But when I see the second and fourth images, it looks as if she has a figure that you could hang just about any clothing on and, coupled with that wonderously sweet face, it'd look great. Seems to me - and I don't know anything meaningful about this - that you ought to talk with her about what her aims in modeling are.

But then again, that could just be envy speaking.

Nice stuff, sir.

Thanks for sharing.

I too am envious of your location, very well done pictures. Thank you for explaining the lighting you used.
