Is there a better deal on a new nikon D2x(4400) & nikor 300mm 2.8 afs VR($4479) than $8879 total no tax or shipping (with nikon 500 rebate =8379)?

That sounds like a good price. You probably already know this - but if you don't need the VR, you can find mint condition 300mm 2.8 AFS lenses for about half the cost of a new VR version.
