Master Po tells me its time to leave the monks and go out on my own and seek the truth. But this Kwai Chang Caine, has no Idea where to start, with Marketing,self promotion,increasing workflow and building a client base. I live in a city of 400,000 2/3rds of that being conservative. Any help or direction anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated!!!
You are taking your first steps right? Keep the big picture in mind, but start small. Get your first paying client, don't need to put together a big marketing campaign to do this, then the next. Make your first customers happy, use them for referrals and references. Each step of the way, reevalute your situation, make the next decisions. Let the business grow, it will take on a life of its own if you don't get ahead of yourself.
What do you intend to get paid to shoot? Are you doing private boudior/glamour images? That seems to be where you have the most experience.
You talk about how conservative the Kansas market is. Yeah, fine, but people are still people and they LIKE sexy/nude shots of themselves or their significant others. One of my favorite statistics is at Jerry Falwell's "Moral Majority" convention in Atlanta about 10 years ago, over 60 percent of the rooms rented to the convention attendees accessed the paid porn channels on the hotel pay TV system.
One way to get started is network marketing. Find a couple of people that you think would look very good in your images, would be interested in having your images, and wouldn't be SO conservative that they wouldn't tell anyone. Offer to shoot a session for them, normally $XXX, if they will promote your work with their friends. It only takes a couple of shoots to get the word around. Pick folks that travel in circles where they have the excess money for such things. It's easier to get $500 from someone that's flush than $100 from someone that has to scrape it together.
I'm sure you can find some nice, conservative women in Kansas that are just dying to be chained to your tool box in a leather catsuit....
One tip - advertise the fact that DeAnn is assisting/styling the shoot. Nothing makes you look less like a pervert than your wife telling the client "I'm sure this jewel is big enough to cover your nipple!"

As others have said, figure out what you want to shoot. If there are colleges or universities nearby try starting there with headshots and modeling portfolio ads in the school paper. This may get you into a much different clientel than you might imagine! Even in Kansas you would be amazed what you can find!
