And yeah, this belongs here-- it ain't "Off-Topic" whether some of you want to admit it or not.

Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez told the ultra-conservative Hoover Institute this past week that he'll give the same priority to cracking down on obscenity that he's given to fighting terrorism.

Ponder that for a moment. I mean, let that sink into your melons and really think about it: The Attorney General of the United States has announced--publicly--that he's gonna give the same.... yep, that's right, THE SAME priority to fighting and prosecuting obscenity as he'll give to fighting terrorism and prosecuting terrorists.

I mean, what's a couple of New York City skyscrapers and a few thousand lives when you've got a personal morality agenda to push?

Gonzales also said he's ordered DOJ attorneys to research ways to "strengthen our hand" at prosecuting obscenity. So I guess we CAN sit back and watch the Patriot Act used to make cases for prosecuting obscenity. Kiss your privacy rights away... oh, wait, I guess I'm just being reactionary and it doesn't effect anyone here. uh huh. But wait again... in the same speech, Gonzales also said he wants to open debates on keeping the expiring provisions of the Patriot Act in effect. Hmmmm... maybe jimmy aint chicken little after all?

So go ahead all you zealous Bush supporters: justify and get behind your Administration's "important as fighting terrorism" anti-smut agenda. And while youre doing that, please don't don't take a break from photographing naked chicks cuz what you're doing is, by anyone's definition, art not obscenity, right? (even if Supreme Court Justice Scalia just said in a speech the other day that obscenity is something the Supreme Court has failed miserably at defining.) So what there is no real legal definition for obscenity. Who cares? Whatever obscenity is it sure ain't shooting naked chicks like we do here, right?

Appropriately enough, Gonzales was introduced at the Hover Inst. by Ed Meese, the last guy the Feds used to go after smut about 15 years ago.

Is there such a thing as a "conservative" without being referred to as an "ultra" that you big fat pot smoking lazy seriously in need of a hot soapy bath liberal......................need I say more...? Get my point? Do we need all the adjectives..? Can we make our point without all that....ever??

Jimmy, if this administration is as successful chasing pornographers as they have been at running Osama Ben Laden to ground, I think you can feel pretty safe. And given their record for correctly identifing the enemy, if they do attack pornography I would expect them to launch a full frontal assault on Disneyland.

Here's the deal. If they arrested every photographer who thought about taking a nudie picture, the price of gas would not go up one penny, so there's nothing in it for Bush and friends. Also, not one single "no bid contract" would be awarded to any company formerly associated with the Vice President. Do the math, they could care less, sleep easy. So what's really up? AG Gonzolas is expected to receive the next nomination to the Supreme Court, he's just blowing smoke up the Religous Right's butt to convince them he's a "conservative" so he can skate through the Senate.

I can definitely think of better use of the nations resources. I’m just glad most things go and cycles and look forward to the day when this cycle is over. What’s amazing to me is that so few people on this forum are concerned about this. I have relatives that would say Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition is porn, luckily they don’t run the country but the guy they voted for is. Given enough years of a born again in the white house and this place would be shut down for sure.

you're right. it's not accurate to label all conservatives as "ultra-conservatives." but in the case of the "Hoover Institute," it's accurate. do some research.

and last i heard, calling someone an "ultra-conservative" doesn't fall into the same name-calling category as words like "redneck, hate-monger, bigot, racist, whitey, cracker." if you think otherwise, you're way out of touch with accepted, mainstream thinking.

i might also mention that someone's political leanings aren't indicative of their personal hygiene habits... again, if you truly believe otherwise, see my last sentence in the previous paragraph.

probably not because there really is no point except to bluster their way through real or imagined slights. While I have paid little attention to the looney left (as opposed to reasoned liberalism ...and there is a difference) or the risible right (as opposed to councilable conservatism) I have several associates that seem to thrive in submerging themselves in that rancorous rhetoric, extracting bits and pieces of pundit posturing and present it as proof positive that the sky is falling. Well for thirty years I've quivered untill I finally figured out that all that stuff was bird manuu all puffed up with invective, insinuation, and "inside info", then coated with a fine glaze of bovine scatology only to be presented as rock solid fact.
Frankly I welcome the use of such words. It warns me to expect little of reasoned value there in.

normally, i would agree. except when the "rancorous rhetoric" is costing lives... every day. in fact, remaining in the center, i.e., liberal/conservative middleism, often results in protracting the very situations that cost those lives.
