Classic Hollywood Glamour Recreated

I worked on a project with a student photographer, recreating a classic hollywood actress glamour black and white photo. The make up required for black and white is completely different than other studio make up. Make up Critique requested.

Re: Classic Hollywood Glamour Recreated

Great job, Faythe.

The mind is a curious beast - I'm sure that the actresses in many of these pictures DID use false eyelashes, and that the lipstick might have been less than perfectly smooth. But the first thing I thought was that the lashes were too modern in design, and too obviously false. Then, the somewhat rough appearance of the lipstick.

I never thought about it before, but I suppose it's true that reproducing this style might involve reproducing the "perceived" image of the style - i.e., in my memory, Joan Crawford's lashes were thick, but not false. I just looked at one of Kobal's books again, and see that my memory is false. Your "mock-up" is actually quite good - a bit blockier than what I saw - but that could also be the lighting and my screen. The eye shadow and liner look a bit more heavily applied than the prints I saw, but only a bit.

All in all, Faythe, the tones look REALLY excellent. Great job.

Thanks for sharing.

Re: Classic Hollywood Glamour Recreated

I think you have created a pretty good glamour shot. Unfortunately when you submitted it to GG's portfolio, it was bigger than 600 pixels in one of its dimensions. When GG resizes it introduces the artifacts you see. The shot appears courser and looks like it has been oversharpened. If you'll resize the photo before uploading to your portfolio, you can avoid this problem. Just make sure that neither height or width is greater than 600 pixels, and that the file size is less than 150K. Here is a comparison photo that shows the problem with side by side examples. The one on the left was 600 pixels when uploaded. The one on the right was 601 pixels. Otherwise both photos were the same.

You can see how badly the hair around the hat looks and the eyes of the photo on the right. That was caused by the resizing method being used.

Here is one of my Hollywood glamour attempts with Niki in the role of **** Tracey:
