Joseph,
I took the NYIP course.
I liked it very much. The course lets you work at your own pace and they teach you the fundamentals of photography. The course consists of workbooks, audio tapes and Videos. The material was created in the mid/late nineties and some of the fashions look funny in the workbooks.
The topics cover developing your eye, exposure, the different types of lenses, color, Darkroom techniques, portrait photography, wedding, glamour etc.
You get assigned a support person that you will send your photo assignments to and they will critique and send you a tape with an explanation of what is good or bad about the image and helpful advice to make it better. (the Monte Zucker wedding seminar tapes are really good too)
I live in an area where there arent too many resources so for me it was a good choice. I also supplemented my studies by joing forums like this one and learning from the critiques that people give each other. I was also fortunate enough to make friends with a very good local photographer who is very generous with his time and knowledge.
If you dont have a local school or college in the area i would say this is a good route to take...
If you have any specific questions about the course feel free to message me.
