photoshopping to remove shadow around subject too close to backdrop

I have been asked to 'clean up' a shot someone else took, non-professional family 'moment' shot. The subject(s) are stading too close to a white wall backdrop, and there is shadow leading edge from flash (as shown in the image snippet).

I have never had to try and photoshop this situation out before. Anyone give me some tips/procedure?
