If you open a photo and then hit CTRL AND ALT AND the ~ (tilde) key, you will see the marching ants showing a selection on your photo.

If you hold down CTRL and "J" (on a pc) it will copy the selection to a new layer.

What you have selected and copied are just the highlights of the photo.

Then go to Image--Adjustments--Brightness and you can turn the highlights up or down on the photo. Once you get them close, you can use the Opacity Fader on the Layers Pallete, to make minor tweaks to the effect, or toggle the eyeball icon on or off on the top layer to compare.

Merge back down to a single layer.

Simpe, quick, very effective.
